The reason the digital mode seems to be falling down is that the error correction is not capable of the noises encountered in a railroad environment( Horns, track noise, engine noise, and just noise in general), Doubling ( the art of talking all at the same time) and operators that do not understand the systems limitations. The railroads should stick to analog until such time as the digital concept has all of its rough edges removed. I think a nationwide trunked system would be more feasible at this time. and that in itself would be a reach.

No one mentioned the Ritron radios. U.S. made and inexpensive.
