Years ago I pretty much quit chasing trains when railfanning alone. I always just hike into a spot, get the shot I want, and hike out. It ususally takes most of the day, so I just shoot what trains show up where I'm at when they arrive.
Here's a shot from a few years back taken during just such a hike. This is the Carroll Creek trestle on Stevens Pass, and is about a 1/2 day hike, (at least for an old duffer like me), in the snow from road's end down at the Foss River.
