I wonder if this was the same guy who was timing mileposts on train 166 in about 1979. This guy sometimes took the Saturday 5:30pm departure to San Jose and then caught Amtrak back to Oakland. He knew the exact distance between each milepost, and often clocked that same train. He's the one who got us at 82 mph between Mountain View and Sunnyvale. With my 14 year old naiveness I asked the engineer how fast he was going back there. With a serious look, he replied "70". (like what did I think he was going to say?).
That train had an unrealistically fast 1:15 schedule for making almost every stop. This guy said the only two times it ever met it's running time with on our trip with a P30CH and once with a Trainmaster. He said he never even saw it meet schedule with an SDP45.
