As a Port Trucker in Puget Sound, I welcome the change from Seattle's already over - crowded Terminal 18 to the WUT in Tacoma. T - 18 is only reached from the quagmire that is Spokane St. Viaduct, which is currently being rebuilt. The resulting construction mess, combined with the Alaskan Way Viaduct demolition & tunnel project, has the roads around Seattle's ports royally screwed up !!! Although T - 18 has rail access via BNSF, it is seldom used. This necessitates many hundreds of " rail - rat " moves daily to the BNSF Seattle International Gateway ( SIG ) @ Stacy St. yard. Although SIG is only a mile from T - 18, the dozens of rail - rat trucks on the roads at any given time really add to the congestion. The rail - rat drivers are the same group that staged a walk - out last month, protesting their low pay & long hours. Of course, they convinently chose the Chinese New Year time period, when no ships were scheduled to call on Seattle, to stage their protests !!! Many of these rail - rats will lose their jobs when NYK, OOCL, & Hapag - Lloyd move to Tacoma's WUT Terminal. The " What " terminal already has excellent in - terminal rail access via Tacoma Rail, as do Port of Tacoma's other 3 ocean terminals. The What terminal is also easier to access via truck, a straight shot up Port of Tacoma Rd from Interstate 5. Their current main customer, Hyundai Shipping Lines, doesn't tax the abilities of the What terminal. I only hope Port of Tacoma rebuilds P of T Rd before the switch happens !!!
