Trainjunkie's reply covers the answer to the "ash can" headlights questions completely. I was a WP brakeman in 1967-68 and was told at the time that the older-style headlamps were preferred in the Feather River Canyon because of the wider beam spread. Though I didn't work east of the Second Subdivision, which ended at Oroville, the many curves through Niles Canyon (on the First Sub) and over Altamont Pass were other areas where the best available lighting would have been desired by the WP.
