To put it in perspective, though, we need to know how much cargo (human or otherwise) was being carried by each mode. Yes, in general the trains are running cleaner and moving stuff more efficiently than the trucks and buses on I-5, but the ocean transport has me wondering. If ships are bringing in ten times more stuff than the trains (and there's not a lot of rail freight traffic on the Surf Line to begin with), then a ten-fold increase in pollution would really mean that ships pollute equally (on a load-by-load basis), not more. I'm simplifying and theorizing the math here, so maybe our resident DEQ expert (calling Mr. Jennison) can pull up the real numbers and crunch them.
