Big, burly, & powerful; yet it had style, too. EMD SD - 45X # 4202 would become Espee # 9504, retaining its' Metallic Blue & White EMD Demo paint scheme for several years with the cab numbers changed and SP letters on the nose replacing the GM letters. While the increased radiator area & extra fan were added to help keep the 4200 H.P. prime mover cool, the SD - 45X was still prone to overheating in the snowsheds & tunnels of Donner Pass. While Espee would revert back to 3600 H.P. EMD's in their Tunnel Motors, the SD - 45X did pioneer the HT-C trucks & modular electronics that were so successful in the Dash 2 line.
