I was reading a publication put out by the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum about the abandoned ATSF Fallbrook Branch and learned something new. In 1916, one of the many storms washed out a big portion of the line from a point about one mile west of O'Neil Lake (located within present-day Camp Pendleton) to Fallbrook Station. This original alignment closely followed the Santa Margarita River. Fallbrook Station is not to be confused with the town of Fallbrook. The former was a small townsite located in the bottom of Temecula Canyon and situated about two miles northwest of the town of Fallbrook. In 1916/1917, an entirely new rail alignment was built from that point near O'Neil Lake into the town of Fallbrook and was placed on a high plateau to avoid more flood damage.
With as much exactness as possible, can anyone point out on Mapquest or GOOGLE maps where this junction point was between the old and new lines? From aerial photos can you still see evidence of the old line between this junction point and the east end of Temecula Canyon?
