I can't speak for this specific situation but I can make a general comment.

While it may seem like they live forever, most trees do not. They have a finite life span, after which they have health issues, weaken, etc. I've seen the same thing happen in city parks, where 100+ year old Oaks become unhealthy, and need to be removed, much to the dismay of the public.

Was that the reason here? I have no idea, but the age would seem about right.
