About 10 years ago, I got involved in a landscaping project with our landscape architect at work. He was laying out the grounds for a new "senior" care facility down in California (central coast somewhere). I must have spent nearly 100 hours on the plans for the grounds--centered and focused around some "magnificent" old eucalyptus tree. (Landscape Architects can be a little different). There were other eucalyptus on-side that needed to be studied by a local arborist to see which would be the best candidates for "thinning". When everything as designed, it turned out that the main tree at the center of all of the planning was "very sick and in need of being taken down". Turned out that if they had built one of the housing units nearby (as planed) it probably would have been crushed during the next big storm--because part of the tree did fall just before construction began.
