The N&W was a PRR "farm road", a subsidiary, similar to the SP-NWP and SP-SSW relationships. The PRR sent Stuart Saunders there to see how he would do. He made a name for himself by dieselizing it overnight -- dieselizing a steam operation makes the books look very good, if only for a few years. Prior to this, the N&W had plans to run steam well into the 60s in order to amortize and pay off the equipment trust for those large Y(whatevers) which were purchased so late in the game (N&W also owned the coal mines). After Saunders went back to the PRR and the PC debacle, the N&W got out from under PRR control and went off on it's own.
