Bulding the Cameron Connection as BNSF calls it, was a condition of the AT&SF/BN Merger. At the same time, the Amtrak Operting Contract came up for renewal, and in the new contract, BNSF wanted Amtrak trains 3/4 off the Chillicothe Subdivision from there to Chicago. The Cameron Connection allowed for this to happen.
Also, by making Amtrak do this, it allowed BNSF to retire the main line between Ash St. and Bridgeport in Chicago.
Once in awhile, Amtrak Trains 3, 4, 5, & 6 will detour from there via the Chillicothe Subdivision to Joliet, then the CN Joliet Subdivision to/from Chicago Union Station.
