Juppo (and others), you might be interested in this 5 minute video which I took on May 8, 2007 as 844 and SD70M 3889 tackle Oregon's Blue Mountains west of La Grande OR with a 17 car passenger train. Notice the different throttle settings on the diesel in the 3 different scenes shown. It was my impression at the time that they pretty much set the throttle on the 844 where they wanted it and then used the diesel's horsepower to maintain the speed they wanted to maintain. Also, this diesel was manned by a UP Engineer and the 844's Engineer told him on the radio what he wanted.
The diesel's dynamic brakes are very helpful in controlling the train's speed on downgrades. I am a shortline Engineer and I can tell you from first-hand experience how nice dynamic brakes are to work with - especially extended range brakes.
