I think these boosters ought to consider the failure of Coos Bay to become a major Pacific port. Shipping companies are unlikely to add Eureka as a port call. The trend is just the opposite, larger container ships, and fewer port calls. The Port of Portland has struggled to keep its container traffic viable. Just having a hinterland of agricultural products is not enough. Almonds and olives do not a traffic base make. These products will just continue to move by truck to Oakland. A rail investment that would make more sense, IMHO, is to rebuild the Tillamook branch to haul timber out of the burn area, and maybe Jim Speakers dream of rebuilding the T&T might even make more sense as a RR route to Yucca Mtn. That would make the NIMBYS along the UP in Southern Nevada a little happier.
