From what I have observed this method of tie replacement is still in common use. Last month I watched the Union Pacific track crew at the Santa Cruz Wye use the same method as the RCBT&P track crew used yesterday to replace ties.
Except for bringing in a ballast regulator and a torsion beam tamper to resurface the rails in Watsonville after ties were replaced last month, the Union Pacific track crew also used the same method in Watsonville as the RCBT&P did yesterday to replace ties.
