In the 1970's, BN in the northwest started a brush removal program after several Geeps got shot as they popped out from behind a large bush or tree and the hunter shot at the motion rather than identifying a critter and then shooting. I know they ran the program on the CW and P&L and part of the Kettle line and CDA branch. When they still used speeders there was a track inspector that carried a pistol to return fire (I believe he worked the Kettle line or the Newport line). When the Roadmaster informed him it was against the law to carry a gun on duty, he informed the Roadmaster: "It's also against the law to hunt from railroad tracks and shoot at little fat guys in speeders, but they do that all the time!!" Roadmaster dropped the matter.
