It is truly amazing how things long discussed and delayed can get up and running quickly when a disaster occurs. After Loma Prieta in 1989, SP suddenly was running commuter trains from Watsonville and Gilroy . A couple of highly successful months went by and the service was pulled suddenly due to "liability issues". A few years later they grudgingly extended service to/from Gilroy and that is as far as it goes to this day. UP says today it is "capacity issues". Translation: someone else has to put in CTC and sidings and whatever other bells and whistles they need before the sorely needed commuter service will extend to Salinas.
