A shuttered rail line considered vital to Douglas County's timber industry could reopen within a couple of years, following Tuesday's $7.09 million award for repairs to Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad.
CORP also likely will be awarded a $4.6 million ConnectOregon grant this summer to enlarge four tunnels near Glendale to accommodate new, larger boxcars. Each boxcar has the capacity of 3 1/2 freight trucks.
The federal grant awarded Tuesday is part of $500 million distributed by the U.S. Department of Transportation through the Tiger IV program.
CORP will add $2.4 million of its own money to restore an 80-mile stretch of the Siskiyou Summit line between Ashland and Weed, Calif. The section has been closed since 2008.
