Tyranny of Amtrak Crews

Way back in 1985 with a ride on the Empire Builder I realized with some dismay that a non-railroader (aka an Amtrak crew chief) was in charge of the trains passengers. This guy was barking out orders to his hapless crew the entire trip, and being a real bully to them and to passengers.
I got the distinct impression that this guy was an airline reject. The sad fact in today's society seems to be that if you give people a little power over others, they will exercise their power in unjust ways. The whole TSA-ification of all of our transport modes does not help either. I am very pleased to see someone else complain about a Trains staff writer, although I think that Bob Johnston pales in comparison to Fred Fraudley whose credo seems to be - "Give me a cabride and I will tow the railroad management line."
