Very interesting point that is seldom brought up, thank you. It is utterly fascinating how the NWP is STILL HERE. No other railroad has faced such universal hatred for its existence along with constant threat and devastation from nature and the economy. No other railroad vanishes for a decade then re-emerges, more vibrant and productive than at any point in the last 15 years.
It is also fascinating to go back and read the vociferous anti-NWP banter on this site up until a year ago. I, myself have been dogged and harassed by fellow fans for suggesting the NWP would rise again. If you can't be inspired and excited about this railroad; it's struggle, it's history and it's future, why are you in this hobby?
I used to railfan all day everyday. Now, the NWP is all I shoot. Nothing within 500 miles is as anachronistically thrilling as this railroad. We should feel so lucky.
Standing in Novato watching a scarlet and gray GP9 in run-8, P-3 blaring with cars rocking over jointed rail at 30mph, ending with a ESPEE bay window caboose. 1972? Nope...last Thursday.
