A group of Pajaro Middle School students were bicycling in Watsonville Friday morning when they spotted a body hanging from a bridge, police said.
The students were part of the Fitness 4 Life Program. They called 911 at 10 a.m. and said they found a dead person hanging from a railroad bridge that stretches over the Pajaro River.
The Monterey County Sheriff's Office identified the man as 54-year-old Francisco Javier Flores Mendoza, of Watsonville. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said they have not determined if Mendoza's death was a homicide or suicide.
The steal and wooden train trestle is used by the Union Pacific Railroad. The Pajaro River divides Santa Cruz County from Monterey County, and Monterey County Sheriff's deputies are in charge of the investigation.
