Lots of post processing

While sorting through some old slides I rediscovered a picture I took in 1977 on the colorful VFCO railway, a 75cm line in Brazil powered by some colorfully painted little Baldwins. The image was badly under exposed, but the basic picture somewhat interesting, one of the little Baldwins making a runby across a small bridge. So I decided to see what Photoshop could do with this old image.

Here's what I started with:

I was a bit surprised when the Railpix editors accepted the image, although they seem more receptive these days to images that show the signs of a lot of processing. I have something of a love hate opinion of the result....wondering what others think. If nothing else it shows what a great tool Photoshop is for saving mediocre old images. It can find detail in shadows, restore color, and sharpen soft images....so don't through away those pix of historic stuff just because they weren't perfect.
