So Stop Being a Railfan

Why have a boring hobby? I don't find it boring. Different, yes. The industry has evolved but is still doing the same basic thing far more efficiently. If it had not done that all but non extremely-bulk freight would be going by truck and we would have far less a hobby with no short line and regional railroads, no PanAMs/RailAmericas/etc., and no transcon for example.

Urban rail is taking off. There are a couple locomotive builders out there offering interesting stuff. Museums are offering more than ever. Who would have believed there would more operating steam engines today than in 1975? (I hope that's a true statement.) We have far better cameras and related equipment so photography challenges are greater with results not possible even ten years ago.

If you find this boring let me suggest you take up stamp collecting! :-)
