running on fewer cylinders

Regarding Rich Hunn's post about running a diesel on fewer cylinders. I believe this is exactly what the GE EVO diesels do when they are in slow idle. They fuel only about 1/2 of the cylinders resulting in a lower idle speed and a sound similar to the old Rumley oil pull tractors. We have nicknamed this "Rumley mode".

Of course this is done to save fuel while idling and I suspect Rich was thinking about fuel savings when operating under minimal loading.
