Having done that ride numerous times, all I can say is that it comes down to adhering to schedule and possibly a bit of radio communication. Meets are at a spring-switch equipped siding, and most times, for me anyway, it was pretty much a running meet with the other train showing up just about the moment our train reached the siding.
