They'll be recycled, all right; that's a lot of money to throw away, and batteries are easier to recycle than burned fossil fuels.

I'd worry more about those compact flourescent bulbs (CFLs) that everyone's pushing these days; yeah, they're more energy efficient, but what about the mercury inside them? Few (if any) cities have effective recyling programs in place for the things, and I doubt the landfills want to deal with that headache. As ABM said, there's no free lunch when it comes to energy.
