Very interestingly when the first contracts for the developement of the San Joquin service were offered. Amtrak was really wanting SP to present a proposal that would allow them to use the SP route because the SP served more of the population centers in the valley. SP basiclly said in a two page proposal come on over and we will take care of you. Santa Fe's proposal was much more volumeous and detailed and they got the contract. Me thinks much for the better. A much faster railroad with much better maintenance and a real willingness to work to keep Amtrak on time. Of course with the speed differencial between many of the freights and Amtrak only 15 to 20 mph it is a lot easier. Robbie
