Remember the railroads had the advantage of the Pullman Company to add capacity. I believe it was 1967 when the government ended the Railway Mail Service which was the final straw, another gift of the Johnson Administration along with Vietnam. "Airmail" ended and the remaining capacity went to trucks and airlines leaving the railroads to scream until AMTRAK four years later.
