It was the first or so generation of car identification to get rid of the clerks and conductors having to make a list of their train. If the integrity of the labels were kept up then the system worked well. Some railroads with captive car fleets still use it and one or more grocery companies have their trucks identified with it. It was an optical scanning system and the lables would mis-read for something as small as being dirty. This just would not work on the railroads in this country and therefore they have gone to system that has a transponder in a plastic "pod" about 6" by 2" attached to the diagonally opposite ends of the equipment. This is the equipment that has taken SCC away from Train Dispatcher to a large extent. Robbie
