Here's probably more than you really want to know about the kind of identification system that has replaced those older bar codes. As Robbie says, the identification tags on rail cars are typically near one end on both sides (diagonally) and at the lower edge. They are readily visible, but you have to look closely because they're only about 6 to 9 inches long.
