The error rate of AEI tags is still surprisingly high, on the order of a whole percentage point in many circumstances. As OPB points out, you need a very high accuracy rate in order to automate car movement processes.

AEI can take you a long way toward getting rid of the clerks, but it doesn't do the whole job. Most roads haven't adopted full AEI automation in any meaningful way yet, at least in my opinion.
