Fresno to Merced is silly and a waste of money irrespective of anything remotely connected to
HSR. If you're going to say the HSR project makes sense and you want to convince the millions of
unwashed who are going to have to pay for it you'd want a demonstration segment that would show
the potential of the system. The only reason to go to Merced from Fresno might be for commuters
to the University and that's a few people at best. Granted the ROW and front end costs would be
higher but a Valley to Silicon Valley demo section would sure make more sense. Until this project
gains wider support it's always going to be deemed a boondoggle.
