Thanks Dave; I had too read of the Longer Tunnel idea for Stampede Pass. The proposal I recall would indeed have run from the lower end of the Borup Loops on the West side, to the Dingles tunnel on the East side & would have required electrifying the line. Big bucks to be spending in 1910. Also, a postscript to the Snoqualmie Pass idea from Washington DOT. As a means to avoid some of the avalanche & rock slide issues on I - 90 East of the summit, use of the former MILW R of W was seriously studied for the Eastbound lanes. Westbound lanes could then be moved away from the problem hillside. This proposal would have split the highway up onto both sides of Lake Keechelus from Hyak down to below Crystal Springs/Stampede Pass exit. Problems with wetlands mitigation in the Crystal Springs/Yakima River area put the kybosh on this idea. Oh well...
