Further perusing the
Lake Railroad web site shows that it is being kept up to date. There are a lot of interesting pictures on this site.
In an interesting turn of events, GP9 1761 was returned to Western Rail on 11/6/2008. By that time 1617 was serving as the power for the Spokane County owned Geiger Spur. This picture, taken from the cab of the 1617, shows the BNSF Coeur D'Alene local delivering the 1761 at the Fairchild interchange. This portion of the Geiger Spur is now abandoned.
After sitting around Western Rail for a few years, 1761 was sold to the "Northern Plains RR" which operates out of Bismark ND. This picture shows 1761 (and ex BN GP7U 1400) enroute to their new home in North Dakota.
Before anybody gets worked up, I need to state that these pictures were taken BEFORE such views from the cab became illegal following the Chatsworth CA disaster.
In yet another twist of irony, 1617 was built as CB&Q 261. 1761 was built as UP 261.
