Snowshed Logic

It is my understanding that snowsheds, whether for railroads or highways are built where snow tends to slide violently. Usually the summer after nasty experiences.
Slides may occur on open slopes. Early snowfall fills the irregularities in the surface; then there is enough melting to produce a slick surface, then new snow falls and eventually the slick surface can't hold it. Studies on this subject are available at your nearest REI book department.
Slides may occur in chutes, fed by open-slope buildup above. First candidates for sheds.
