That's the time to call the 800 number of the railroad.
I have the 800 numbers of the major railroads in my area stored
in my cell phone, so that if I see a problem, I don't have to go
to the nearest grade crossing to get the number.
And, of course, you may also want to call the local authorities.
Yes, these people are idiots. But the crew doesn't deserve to
have to deal with this kind of situation.
I was listening on my scanner a number of years ago when a train
collided with a van full of people that didn't stop at a crossing.
I still remember the voice of the crew member calling in to the
dispatcher. (No, I didn't drive to the scene.)
I was also aboard a train once that struck a truck that didn't
stop for a crossing. That incident seriously injured the truck driver.
Yes, I've called in some problems, such as malfunctioning grade
crossing equipment, or, in one case, gates that were smashed by
a driver. And, the railroads were always appreciative.
