If you don't mind driving down to Oakland, you can hang out in the Jack London Square area. The main line runs down the middle of the street, so there's no question of public access. It's a major dining/entertainment area, so it's pretty safe. Lots of Amtrak and UP action--much more than on Altamont, and ACE doesn't run on weekends anyway.
