Well, actually since the actual cause of the bridge failure is not yet known, it's impossible to say whether or not the so-called known defects were the cause, or even had an influence, on the collapse of the 35-W bridge over the Mississippi River.
What is known is that engineers determined that none of the noted defects were a danger to the immediate safety of the bridge.
