Right! I always though it was pretty cool- and lent an engineer more thought and options to train handling. And, therefore, led to better engineers (I figure) by exercising the brain! I believe the Hostler/Herder in Barstow actually puts up the fence then puts the DP in run 1 FWD until a bump is felt. A sure way to know if the DP's lnked right!
A good place to try your skills is the San Diego Sub (old 4th District ATSF) with the BARSDG. Frankly, it kicked my ass.
I find the most troubling aspect of DP is the elimination of Helper districts and a notion that a carrier can run 10,000 foot stack trains.
