Just as a historical note, The SANTA FE ran (at that time called remote control units) from Barstow to Bakersfield back in the late 60's and then went system wide with them. All this with the old "Locotrol I" technology. They worked great and made for sweet train handling between Barstow and Mojave too. Since the SP had yet to wire the tunnles, that was fun with continuity dropping in and out; we soon paid real close attention to planning ahead as far as the set-up of the rear units was concerned.
