The visionary plan was to modernize and streamline SP. In 1993, Moyers ordered miles of double track of the Overland route retired and removed (Short sidings on the I-5 corridor were retired too) just as he did with Illinois Central's Chicago-New Orleans double track. It was sickening to watch MoW tear it up. Some rail trains were sent to re-use for Sunset double tracking, but a lot was salvaged as 50ft track panels in gondolas and sent east over Donner.
My father documented the last time MoW equipment travelling on rails to pass thru Summit tunnel #6 before the rail was unbolted and dragged out by tractors.
