There are currently plans to put the double track back in between Shed 10 and Switch 9. It could possibly even happen this coming summer. This has proved to be a bottleneck especially during winter when trains have to stop during a storm. As for Norden to Shed 47, we will probably never see trains operate here in the winter time again. This is an absolute maintanence nightmare. Tunnel 6 drains from the summit at the west portal all the way through to the east end. It is a major ice flow in the winter with ice building up over the rails. As for the other tunnels and sheds east of there to Eder they are also one giant ice cube in the winter. Removing ice is extremely dangerous and time consuming and used to involve a great deal of explosives, which the UP would never allow today. Check out the video "Battle for Donner Pass" and you will get a good idea of what they had to deal with. The idea of putting in a new shed at the east end of tunnel 41 and extending the double track from there to Shed 47 has been discussed but there are no plans at this time.
