Depended on the part of the country. The South has the infamous "Jim Crow" laws. Passenger depots in the South had separate waiting rooms for "colored" passengers and coaches were partitioned.
Makes one wonder if a black passenger riding the SP from LA to New Orleans would have been forced to move to a colored section either in Texas or Louisiana.
