I remember Lloyd very well, when he was the Superintendent of the SP San Jauquin Division out of Bakersfield in the early 1980s. After the great floods of 1983, almost all the crews were reaching Mojave with 8 or more hours onduty. A provision was made for these crews, where they could call the SP Mojave Interlocking Operator, and place an order for food from Carl's Jr. Fast Food Restaurant, that was located across the street, East of the Depot. Carl's employees would come across the street to the Depot with the food and the Operator would hand it up as they went by. There were certain exceptions, some that had to be approved by the Trainmaster onduty, or if a crew was very close to reaching the 8 hour requirement, they could have a meal. This even included AT&SF crews. A few years after the floods were over, this was still happening, and some crews complained that they should have gotten a meal, when SP thought they shouldn't, and others that did, when others thought they shouldn't. So Lloyd, made a decision that AT&SF crews would no longer be fed, but ALL SP crews, no matter how long onduty, and no matter the circumstances, could have any food and beverages they wanted from Carl's at SP expense, when they passed through Mojave. Needless to say, a majority of the crews took advantage of this, even crews on the hotest train on the SP at the time, the Shell Unit Oil Train, got fed. However, after Lloyd left, Trainmaster Bill Deskin ended this about February 1988, with the anticipation of the downsising of the Clerical Force at Mojave and the pending closeure and abandonment of the Depot. Part of it was, the Operator was eliminated on March 20, 1986 and the food order taking was given to the Yard Clerks, it was overloading them. With the clerks no longer being at trackside at the Depot, after it was closed in May 1988, it was going to create an inefficient operation and Bill didn't want this. But crews from that time will always remember Lloyd and appreciate him for this. This info. from me, Charlie A. Kramer (deceased Mojave Operator) and Tom "Bodacious, Far Out Funky Man" Blair, retired Mojave Yard Clerk.
