Since this a railroad forum, let's look at data on freight railroad car movements. For overall carloads, the record is mixed. Some commodities such as coal are down and others are up. The worst year was 2009, but the downwards trend started in 2008 before Obama became president. After 2009, overall freight trends have been in an upward pattern.

The following Association of American Railroads shows that although coal accounts for 47% of the railroads' ton-miles, it generates only about 25% of the railroads' revenues.
