Excellent synopsis of BART's major error. Charlie Smallwood told me years ago SP was reported to be pleased, shall we say, with the broad gauge policy.

But BART made up for that fiasco somewhat with the major accomplishment of the Transbay Tube, which has proved to be a massive ridership and revenue generator. The CHSRA equivalent would be the Tejon punch-thru, much shorter, faster, more centrally located, cheaper to construct, operate and maintain than the easterly oriented 19th century Tehachapi alignment.

How stupid to slavishly follow a bottlenecked freight route and not be compatible with freight. Who is going to want to buy the DeTour?
