Amtrak Crews

Would things work more efficiently if Amtrak ran a Via style operation with no conductors? I'm not trying to advocate cutting jobs, nor am I knocking any Amtrak conductors, it's just something I've been wondering. With Via and the freight railroads running with all members of their T&E crews in the cab, you'd think Amtrak would have followed suite, especially given the fact that they like to cut expenses where possible.
