Backup trains

A bit of ancient history: A long time ago, terminals of the very long runs for the passenger side of railroads kept strings of elderly cars. Some even assembled "properly". Given several hours and many phone calls, and overtime, they could be on the road. Maybe once a year.

Imagine two or three days in a Harriman Commute?

Would railfans "chase" such creations?
