Don't know about turkey trains, but MANY years ago, the PRR handled live chickens in specially modified "chicken cars" coming from Delmarva Peninsula (Delaware-Maryland-Virginia) origins to Wilmington, Philadelphia (and Camden?). Forty-foot box cars were modified in the manner of cattle cars, but set up to handle live chickens in cages that were roughly 18" x 24" x 36." Two of these cars actually survive as open-air passenger cars used by the Wilmington & Western RR. One could speculate that during a "chicken rush," trains would arrive in the PRR yard at Wilsmere, DE, trailing solid consists of "chicken cars." The University of Delaware football team isn't known as the "Blue Hens" for no good reason.
