I hear a number of people (on this forum mostly) claim that private enterprise would do the job of passenger railroading much more efficiently than Publicly run services would. I will admit that Amtrak is often a bit short on finesse (especially when compared to the ATSF or the California Zepher). But in order to be more efficient, they surely would have to do a lot of stuff very differently.

So just exactly what is all this magic stuff that a private company would do that Amtrak (or State owned successors) aren't already doing, or wouldn't do if they could? Somebody enlighten me! - Please!

If anyone knows of something that hasn't already been tried, don't hide it - good ideas that don't die young in the crucible of practical reality are hard to come by. But even if 95% of all good ideas get hedged up some way, The 5% that do workout are worth it.
